Clay Country Trails Feasibility Study Draft Report

Production of the Clay Trails Study, written by Bernhard Ray Cornwall Council, has been an important part of the emerging strategy for the trails.   The Clay Country Local Action Group identified the importance of the network of trails for the area from its inception.  and includes in its objectives to “extend the network of existing trails to include new multiuse pathways and recreational opportunities”.

The Study includes the relevance of the trails and the accessible network links to Goss Moor National Nature Reserve.  Both Natural England and the Clay Country Local Action Group invested grant aid for this Feasibility Study.  The Study identifies missing links and development opportunities to take the existing trails to new users as well as extending the trails further.  The Clay Country Local Action Sustainable Tourism Coordinator provided the marketing elements of the study.

Now complete, this study highlights the potential for enhancement and ‘joining up’ of the network to make it more attractive to visitors and to locals, providing both leisure benefits and off-road routes for sustainable travel around the area.
In Summary...

What has emerged is the realisable potential to create an impressive and
comprehensive network of multi-user trails across the whole China Clay Area.

Such a network could not only help cater for the health and recreational needs
of existing local communities but play a major role in assisting the sustainable
development and economic recovery of an area which is still struggling to cope
with the implications of the down-sizing of the dominant china clay extraction
   industry.

The development potential for the trails and the marketing and business development work is given in great detail in the Study.  The details of actions for more than twelve missing links or improvements are given in graphic and mapped detail and approximate costings are included.

Example details from the report:
Missing Link 6a Trenance Downs to Wheal Martyn

Viewed from Ruddlemoor, the proposed missing link would use an old haul route from Lansalson (near Wheal Martyn), around the left hand side of the flooded pits and then skirt half way up the wooded sky-tip before reaching a public footpath that connects to Trenance Downs.

Missing Link 12 Improvements at Par Beach

Currently, the St Blazey to Par Sands Trail ends at the western end of Par Sands but a separate timber ramp to improve the accessibility of the beach was constructed further to the east. This and other possible improvements to the trail will be re-examined in detail.

The delivery of the actions in this Clay Trails Study is currently under proposal and the next stage of consultation and grant searches is now underway.
